Safe Computing Advice

Permalink to this page

You will use your own computer during your study with the Open University (you can check the requirements for any course you want to study at the 'PC4Study' website). We want to make sure that you use your computer safely so that you continue to benefit from our on-line course components, and to help you to avoid problems which can be prevented.

Our Website
Our 'Safe Computing' website provides no-nonsense advice from our in-house IT Team designed to help you to use your computer safely whether it is an Apple Mac or a PC. it explains in plain language how to stay safe and offers the option of subscribing to an email bulletin which will alert you to issues as they arise. Make sure that you are using current versions of all your software.

The Risk
When you receive an email or even simply look at a website or do nothing more than make a broadband connection to the Internet, your computer can potentially be exposed to the risk of picking up a computer virus or a malicious attempt to subvert it with malware or worse. Taking proactive steps to prevent this is important in maintaining the long-term health of your own computer system.

Latest Safe Computing Bulletins
Below we've listed the 25 most recent security bulletins from the 'Safe Computing' website. You can subscribe to our email bulletins and receive timely advice from us as issues arise.
