Requirements Engineering (RE) lies at the heart of software development. It is concerned with identifying the purpose of a software system and the problem context in which that system will be used. It acts as the bridge between the real world needs of users, customers, and other constituencies affected by a software system, and the capabilities and opportunities afforded by software-intensive technologies. Our research programme in this area covers a range of requirements engineering activities, from the social, business, and organisational processes of eliciting requirements, to the technical and mathematically grounded techniques for the specification and analysis of those requirements. The programme focuses on the elicitation and specification of software problems and requirements, on the analysis and handling of inconsistent requirements, on the study of relationships between requirements and architectural design, and the management of quality requirements such as usability, security, and mobility. Our research addresses the foundations, techniques and tools, and applications in these areas.
