I have worked in communications for the Royal Air Force for ten years. I wanted a formal qualification that would be recognized by industry and that would supplement my Royal Air Force training. The Open University's MSc in Computing for Commerce and Industry provided exactly what I was looking for. The modules offered a diversity that covered the ever growing overlap between computing and communications. I am now highly employable in my specialist field.
I was fortunate to know someone already embarking upon one of the modules and was able to view the level and standard of the materials. Even at postgraduate level, most topics are taught from first principles. One would be hard pressed to find teaching materials that are so thorough and explanatory with a smooth transition from simple concepts to complex ones. The use of software materials supplements most courses and is of the highest standard.
The most daunting task was the final year. From the outset, The Open University prepares you for the effort that the research project will require. With the support of my family and employer combined with my own resolution, I was able to devote sufficient time to pass the degree at the first attempt. This is also a tribute to the guidance and invaluable support from my mentor. Passing the degree gave me a huge sense of achievement and I look back on the four and a half years as a valuable investment.
Financing my studies myself gave me added determination to pass each course. I found the courses extremely good value for money and encourage anyone looking for a recognized qualification to look to The Open University. The modular courses are particularly suitable for anyone with varying work loads or for those who work away from home.
